Elève de Victor Dupont (1875-1942) grâce à lui il découvre très tôt l’œuvre de Cézanne.
En 1917 il est incorporé en temps qu’auxiliaire et peintre.
Il fut ensuite envoyé en Belgique l’offensive de Juillet 18 le trouve aux arrières de Champagne où il fit de nombreux portraits de ses chefs et de ses camarades. .
Il rejoint vers1920 le groupe de l’Arche qui redynamise l’art catholique après la première guerre mondiale.
En association avec les éditions d’art Rouart , il organise à Auxerre en Juin 1921, une exposition des « ateliers d’art sacré » avec Maurice Denis et Georges Desvallières . Il est dés lors très proche du sculpteur Fernand PY , de l’organiste Paul Berthier et de la poétesse Marie Noel .
En 1922 il se marie et s’installe jusqu’en 1933 dans un atelier 25 Boulevard du Montparnasse.
Il est sociétaire des salons d’Automne et des indépendants
A partir de 1933 et jusqu’en 1952 il vit et travaille dans une grande maison au pied de la cathédrale d’Auxerre. Il dirigera avec Jean Burkhalter l’école de dessin de cette ville.
En parallèle à son œuvre de peintre et d’illustrateur il va réaliser un énorme travail d’homme de théâtre (écriture de plus de 150 pièces, décor, mise en scène) Un riche fond des documents de la revue JEUX, TRETEAUX ET PERSONNAGES dessins et gouaches réalisés par lui est conservé à la bibliothèque d’Auxerre.
« L’art pour l’art, c’est stupide, surtout lorsqu’on s’exerce sur le domaine religieux. L’art a un but, l’art est un enseignement. Un tableau, un panneau doit vous forcer à réfléchir. Un tableau religieux est un sujet de méditation, bien plus encore que sujet d’admiration »

Un de ses fils : François BROCHET (1925-2001) sera l’élève de Fernand PY et réalisera une œuvre importante de peintre graveur et surtout sculpteur

Pupil of Victor Dupont (1975-1942) and thanks to him he discovered very early on the works of Cézanne. In 1917 he was engaged as an auxiliary and painter.
He participated in the battles during the summer of 1918 in Belgium where he painted many portraits of his leaders and comrades..
In the very early 1920’s he joined the group “the Ark” that revitalizes Catholic art after the First World War .

From 1933 until 1952 he lives and works in a large family home at the foot of the cathedral in Auxerre. He ran with the artist Jean Burkhalter the Art school in this same town.
In parallel to his work as a painter and illustrator he does an enormous amount of work as a playwright (writing over 150 pieces , decoration, staging) drawings and gouaches by him are kept in the library in Auxerre.
"Art for art's sake is stupid , especially when exercised on the religious sphere. Art has a purpose , art is taught. A painting, a panel should force you to think. A religious painting is a subject of meditation, far more than a subject of admiration ”

One of his son’s François Brochet (1925-2001) was a student of Fernand PY and carries out an important work as a painter and engraver and more so a sculptor .
